Founded in 1903, the BF&M group of companies operates in Bermuda, Halifax and across the Caribbean. BF&M is comprised of several companies selling health, life, pension, property and casualty insurance products. Now, we are partnering with BF&M who is looking for a Senior Accountant to join their team in Dartmouth, NS.


Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Senior Accountant will be responsible for preparing efficient and accurate financial and regulatory reporting in accordance with the company’s internal controls, policies, and procedures.


Responsibilities will include:

 

  • Preparing quarterly financial statements by collecting data, analyzing, and investigating variances, summarizing data, and preparing supporting schedules for calculations within timeframes.
  • Maintaining the general ledger & reporting system ensuring accurate accounting records and reports.
  • Strong insurance knowledge can reconcile loss data and work with actuaries on the regular basis.
  • Preparing calculations and posting of transactions through the general ledger including consolidations and reconciliations with group companies.
  • Providing information for external and internal audits ensuring audit timelines are met.
  • Preparing audited financial statements and notes disclosures in accordance with IFRS and US GAAP.
  • Preparing quarterly and annual regulatory reporting in accordance with Bermuda regulatory requirements and deadlines.
  • Ensuring adherences with financial accounting and regulatory requirements.
  • Responding to ad-hoc and routine request by gathering, analyzing, summarizing, and interpreting data.
  • Providing input and participating in the implementation and testing for finance projects and upgrades.
  • Coaching junior accountants in various systems, accounting, and reporting processes.
  • Other related duties as required.


The ideal candidate will possess:

 

  • CPA designation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration.
  • 3+ years of audit experience at a public accounting firm.
  • 5+ years of insurance or reinsurance experience either in industry or audit.
  • Experience working on Bermuda Monetary Authority regulatory reporting.
  • IFRS 17 and IFRS 9 knowledge and experience.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills. Proficient in Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work individually and in a team environment.
