Cavendish Farms is a leading producer of frozen food products for retail and foodservice markets throughout Canada, the United States, and around the world. They have state-of-the-art potato processing plants in Prince Edward Island, Lethbridge, Alberta, and Jamestown, North Dakota, and an appetizer plant in Wheatley, Ontario. Their head office is in Dieppe, New Brunswick and has sales office locations in Toronto, Montreal, and Boston. Partnered with Meridia, Cavendish Farms is in search of a Senior Research Scientist to join their team in New Annan, PEI.

 

Role Description

 

Reporting to the VP, Agriculture Research and Development the Research and Development Specialist, you will be responsible execution of all operational and technical aspects of research trials including site selection, planning and design of experiments and small plot activities.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Planning and preparation of field trial layouts, maps, ensuring availability of material required for trials timely
  • Perform field work including planting, spraying, irrigating, scouting, harvesting and grading of field research plots
  • Crop pest and disease assessment and soil and tissue sampling
  • Ensure that data collection is recorded according to pre-established methodology and data is processed and interpreted through adequate statistical analysis
  • Apply standard quality control procedures to assure accuracy of test results, updating and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Prepare an Annual, Monthly, weekly and daily activities schedule to organize time and resources required
  • Create and manage an annual operational activity plan for the Ag Research program including people demand forecasting, cost management, purchasing of materials and equipment required
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

 

Your Qualifications

 

As the Senior Research Scientist, you possess an advanced degree in a relevant field, coupled with a significant track record of experience in Agronomy, Plant Science or any relevant field. You should demonstrate exceptional problem-solving abilities, leadership skills, the capacity to collaborate, and willingness to learn.

 

Your qualifications include:

 

  • Bachelors in Agriculture/ Crop Science/ Plant Genetics/ Agronomy is required
  • Relevant years of experience in Agronomy, Plant Science or any relevant field is required
  • Work experience in potato crop is preferred
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast paced, team oriented, research environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft applications and database programs
